Hughenden

Today I went to Hughenden, which is the historic home of Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli. Although it was built towards the end of the 18th century, it was modified by the Disraelis making the home a beautiful example of Victorian architecture. It has elegant walled gardens, which are built into the side of a hill.

During World War Two, the home was requisitioned as a military base with the codename “Hillside”. It was used to produce maps for bombing raids. Artists and graphic designers would draw the maps while teams in other parts of the mannor would reproudce them on printing presses for distribution to British and American pilots.

A large dining room with a round table
The dining room is laid out how it was when Queen Victoria visited Disraeli. Her chair is made shorter than all the others so that her feet would reach the floor.
